Trumping Toxicity with Teal

Posted by Bruce Peters

Your beliefs become your thoughts,

Your thoughts become your words,

Your words become your actions,

Your actions become your habits,

Your habits become your values,

Your values become your destiny.

These are interesting times, we live in. The validity of science along with the assertions of alternative facts, fake news and vociferous name-calling are common currents in the daily flow of information. Whatever color your political stripes may be — anger, accusations, and regular doses of flagrant self-righteousness are abundant across the citizenry.

The rawness of emotions feels a little disorienting, doesn’t it? Like somehow, we’ve all been transported into a strange, new realm. It should feel disorienting. We’re living a script right out of science fiction.

The ABCs of Conversation: Accountability, Beyond Teal, and Commitment

Posted by Bruce Peters

Here at Beyond Teal tremendous emphasis is placed on joining the conversation around Teal
concepts, strategies, tools, and guiding philosophies. This dialogue comes in many forms: presentations, workshops, focus groups, and even this blog. By the mere virtue of reading these words you have become part of the Teal community.

Today, I am drawing attention to an article published by Valeria Maltoni. For several years, I’ve followed Maltoni’s insights. Virtually every day she spins out probing “conversations” worthy of deep thought.

Recently, Maltoni published a poignant gem entitled Power of Commitments. The concept of commitment is central to our “WHY” at Beyond Teal and we recommend you read this piece (it takes about 4 minutes).

Running Late? Stop It!

Posted by Bruce Peters

"I'm running late."

This is the slogan of our times.

You don't walk or amble late. You run. And it's not a joyous run. It's a constant, frenetic pursuit of some notion of being "caught up." But caught up to what?

The world is changing ... rather ... accelerating at a speed and pace that we have never experienced before. Our lives are defined by strains against the clock, technology, politics, and our sense of genuine health and well-being. The notion of predictability and a relaxed confidence in the larger forces of the world feel like quaint notions of a slower time romanticized in history books and our imaginations.

Connecting it to Teal

Posted by Bruce Peters

Has it already been a month? On Dec. 1st and 2nd, 2016 Beyond Teal’s inaugural workshop -- What Happens When You Get What You Want: Teal in Your Third Act – was presented to a diverse crowd of attendees.

There was diversity in leadership titles — CEOs, entrepreneurs, managers, directors, presidents, and self-employed — and the types of organizations they represented — non-profit, high-tech, financial, creative, and entrepreneurial. Attendees’ ages spanned at least five decades and the accompanying differences in work-life philosophies and perspectives.

If you attended one or both days of that workshop, it’s been a month of holiday bustle and now is the perfect time to revisit the discussions and link it to Teal.

If this program is of interest to you, check out our 2017 Winter FLP Program.

A Lonely Story and Its Riddle

Posted by Bruce Peters

The Story (adapted from In Pursuit of Loneliness by Philip Slater): Once upon a time (don’t all good stories begin this way?), a strong, capable man sought escape from the bustle and din surrounding him. He found refuge deep in a forest that was beautiful and rich with wood, game, water, and fertile soil. It was peaceful. Clean. The smell was fresh and pure. It was perfect. And it was all his to use as he wished.

Winter proved to be frigid and the trees surrounding the hut made excellent firewood. But without the trees to shade his shelter, the man was under relentless heat when summer arrived. He complained bitterly.

Legendary Thoughts: A Few Moments for Jerry Harvey

Posted by Bruce Peters

One year and nearly two months ago on August 1, 2015, one of the great thinkers and communicators in organizational leadership passed away. Jerry Harvey was a Professor Emeritus of Management at the George Washington University. He had served as a consultant to multiple industrial, governmental, religious, military, educational, and charitable organizations and authored approximately 50 professional articles and two books.

The most meaningful way to pay tribute to Harvey’s intellectual prowess, witty sense-of-humor, and inimitable perspective is to spend a few moments of quiet thought on his legendary contributions. Harvey was an extraordinary thinker and thought provoker. He had a sense of turning a dogmatic phrase or idea on its head.

The Responsibility of Followership

Posted by Bruce Peters

Common conventional wisdom says that there are leaders and there are followers. Or that leadership is a person, a high-ranking title, or comes from being in front of a room. Before you start nodding your head in agreement, here are two perspectives on the idea of followership to take into consideration.
